Bio

Michele Onesto was immersed in the art of glassmaking from an early age, starting from the simplest and humble work in his father Luigi’s glassworks, letting himself be carried away by the curiosity and the beauty of an art that he has made his own by attending the best possible school: stealing the secrets with the eyes and trying, with passion and determination, to work the glass during the production breaks.

Over the years he perfected the sommerso (submerged) technique that he learned from the Glassmaster Giancarlo Signoretto

Vetreria Oball was established in 1970 in Murano, Italy. The founding father Luigi Onesto was one of the greatest Murano glassmakers in Italy. Luigi Onesto was born in Murano into a glass-making family. At the age of 15, he began to learn the secrets of glass as an apprentice at Gambaro & Poggi, one of the oldest and most famous glass factories on the island. In 1978, he established his glass art studio, the Vetreria Artistica Oball. Onesto’s elegant vessels, bottles and objects are created by the technique called sommerso, which incorporates layers of different colors. In Australia, he would be the most sought after glass artist. He fetches prices well above market due to his “Sommerso” technique, which in Italian literally means “submerged”. This technique is used to create several layers of glass (usually with different contrasting colors) inside a single object, giving the illusion of “immersed” colors that lay on top of each other without mixing
