Bio
Australian artist Margaret Olley (b.1923) exhibited talent as a painter while still in high school. By the age of 24 she had won the Mosman Art Prize, and the next year had her first solo exhibition at Macquarie Galleries. Margaret Olley's paintings were post-Impressionist, and she was greatly inspired by Henri Matisse.
Margaret Olley's artwork of brightly colored floral arrangements, fruit, and lived-in home interiors display her skill with oil paints; she also did a more somber series in the '60s of portraits of Aboriginal women. Margaret Olley's paintings were exhibited frequently, and right up until her death in 2011, she was working on new still life oil paintings.
Margaret Olley held over 90 solo exhibitions during her life time. She was appointed an Officer Order of Australia (AO) in 1991, and awarded Life Governor of the AGNSW in 1997. The AGNSW named the Margaret Olley, Twentieth Century European Gallery in her honour in 2001. She was appointed Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) in 2006. Margaret was awarded Honorary Doctorates from Macquarie University, the University of Sydney, the University of Newcastle, the University of Queensland, Southern Cross University, Lismore and Griffith University, Brisbane.
