John Hall Thorpe (1874-1947) The Open Gate Colour Woodcut 1922

John Hall Thorpe (1874-1947) woodcut print ca.1922 on fine cream wove paper. An image of an English countryside scene with haystacks, fencing, clouds in blues and greens. Hall Thorpe's colourful and decorative woodcuts were very popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Inscribed  and titled centre and lower right in the margin. Overall condition is very good. Literature: Hall Thorpe Coloured Woodcuts, Richard King, The Print Room, Sydney, 1980, no. 21, page 56. These are extremely collectible and valuable pieces of art to cherish. Provenance: Schubert Art Galleries label verso.

Bio

John Hall Thorpe (29 April 1874 – 8 October 1947), invariably known as 'Hall Thorpe', was an Australian artist who achieved considerable success in England with his decorative prints of flowers, fruit and landscapes. Thorpe moved from Sydney to London just before the First Word War and set up a studio on Redcliffe Sq. Here he created most of his woodcuts between 1920 and 1927. 

Thorpe became a household name in the field of home decoration and was a strong influence on fashions in wallpaper design. Over time his work fell out of fashion but a revival from the 1980s has renewed interest in his work.
