Bio

John Glover (1767–1849) was an English-born Australian artist known for his landscape paintings, particularly of the Tasmanian wilderness. He was born in Houghton-on-Hill, Leicestershire, England, and trained as an artist in London. Glover's early career saw him working as a watercolorist and a drawing master.

In 1831, at the age of 64, Glover migrated to Australia with his family, settling in Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania). The landscape of Tasmania captivated Glover, and he became one of the first artists to paint the Australian bush in a naturalistic style. His paintings often featured the rugged terrain, lush vegetation, and dramatic skies of Tasmania.

Glover's works are characterized by their vibrant colors, attention to detail, and romanticized depictions of the Australian landscape. He was particularly skilled at capturing the effects of light and atmosphere in his paintings.

Glover arguably became the most important landscape artist outside Europe, maintaining his reputation in England and forging a new following and great success in Australia. Glover’s influence continues to this day, with the John Glover Art Prize one of Australia’s most significant awards for landscape painting.

During his time in Tasmania, Glover's reputation as an artist grew, and he became influential in the local art scene. He exhibited widely and received numerous commissions, including some from prominent figures in colonial society.

Today, John Glover is regarded as one of Australia's most significant colonial artists. His paintings are held in major collections and galleries both in Australia and internationally, and he is celebrated for his contribution to the artistic representation of the Australian landscape during the early colonial period.
