Bio
Born 31 December 1877 in Dunedin, New Zealand, Power's career spanned the artistic establishments of both Australia and England. He was known for his contributions to the Australian art scene during the early to mid-20th century. He showed an early interest in art, and his talent was recognized by his family and teachers. Power studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne, where he developed his artistic skills. He won the National Gallery of Victoria Travelling Scholarship in 1900, which allowed him to travel and study art in Europe. Power spent several years in Europe, studying and absorbing the artistic influences of the time. He trained at the Académie Julian in Paris and travelled to various art centres, including London and Florence. After his European sojourn, Power returned to Australia and became involved in the local art scene. He established himself as a prominent figure in the Melbourne art community. Power's work is often associated with the Heidelberg School, an Australian art movement that focused on capturing the unique light and landscapes of the Australian bush. His paintings, particularly landscapes, demonstrated a keen appreciation for the Australian environment. Power exhibited his works in various exhibitions, gaining recognition for his artistic achievements. He was a regular exhibitor at the Victorian Artists' Society and the Royal Art Society of New South Wales. His paintings are part of significant collections, including those of the National Gallery of Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria. His contributions to Australian art are acknowledged in the context of the Heidelberg School and its impact on shaping a distinctive Australian artistic identity. Power continued to paint and exhibit throughout his life, maintaining his involvement in the art community. He passed away on 6 January 1951 in Hawthorn, Victoria, leaving behind a legacy as a significant figure in Australian art history. Harold Septimus Power's work is appreciated for its contribution to the Australian artistic landscape, capturing the essence of the country's landscapes and contributing to the broader narrative of Australian art.
