A rare early original Donald Friend (1915-1989) mixed media, ink and wash painting on paper titled 'Vincenzo' signed and dated Donald 1950 upper right. The work bears an inscription to the upper right 'Testaccio, Ischia Vincenzo.'. Donald Friend was known for spending much of his career abroad, visited Testaccio, a district in Rome and Ischia, an island near Naples, along with other locations in Italy during the 1950s. This unique piece in black and sepia tones is in very good condition with a small loss to the upper right corner, not visible when framed. The frame is in teak grain with gold and black trim and double acid-free mat board under glass. Provenance: Important Australian Art from The Collection of Sir James D. Wolfensohn KBE AO (President of the World Bank Group from 1995 to 2005). Heritage Auctions, Texas, USA. Lot 31076, Auction 17212. As an investment piece this is quite extraordinary in terms of its subject, style, period and provenance.

Bio
Donald Friend, who is often referred to as “the great wine of Australian Art”, was born in Sydney on 6th February 1915. He studied with Dattilo Rubbo at the Royal Art Society of New South Wales in 1934 and under Bernard Meninsky and Mark Gertler at the Westminster School of Art, London. He spent much of his life outside Australia including periods in Ceylon (1957-61) and Bali (1966-80). He had power and sensitivity as a draughtsman, with an ability to delineate forms in an almost calligraphic line, mixed with feeling for colour and design. He died in Sydney on 16 August 1989, aged 74.
