Bio

David Boyd was an Australian painter best known for his fluid landscape paintings which depicted themes from colonial history. His colorful works can be categorized by their textured brushstrokes and wavy, psychedelic imagery.

Born on August 23, 1924 in Murrumbeena into the so-called Boyd dynasty, Boyd’s family was known for their artistic and musical talent and produced a number of Australian cultural figures, including Arthur Merric Boyd, Guy Martin Boyd, and Merric Boyd. As a young man, the artist studied at the Melba Memorial Conservatorium of Music in Melbourne until he was conscripted to fight in the army. After returning home, he studied fine arts at the National Gallery School and began working with ceramics. Beginning in the later 1950s, Boyd pursued a career in painting—primarily producing works related to the history of Aboriginal Tasmanians in Australian.

He later relocated to Europe to travel, where he spent over a decade. Boyd died on November 10, 2011 in Sydney, Australia.

Today, the artist’s works are in the collections of the Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, the Art Gallery of Western Australia in Perth, and the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide, among others.
