Bio
Belinda Golder Kngwarreye is an Alyawarre artist from Utopia, an Indigenous homelands region some 240km north-east of Mparntwe (Alice Springs). Born in Alice Springs in 1988, she grew up in Boundary Bore, one of the sixteen homelands of the Utopia community. She began painting in her twenties under the guidance of her grandmother, leading Utopian artist Polly Ngale. Inspired by her grandmother's legacy, Belinda's art primarily centers around the Bush Plum Dreaming. Belinda is the sister of noted Utopian artist, Janet Golder Kngwarreye. Belinda is following in the footsteps of other well-known artists from the talented Kngwarreye family, most notably Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Kudditji Kngwarreye and her grandmother, Polly Ngale. Belinda paints Bush Medicine and My Country designs, but she is best known for painting the story handed to her by Polly Ngale - the Bush Plum Dreaming. Anwekety, the bush plum, is a nutritious food source, high in vitamin C, and is a highly sought-after bush tucker. Women know where the bush plum grows, and they make journeys to go and collect them. There is also spiritual significance to the bush plum, and songs and ceremony are performed in the hope that the plants will regenerate and continue to provide for them. Belinda paints the Bush Plum Dreaming story that she inherits from her grandmother Polly Ngale. Her technique is to render the many colours of the bush plum plant as the fruits ripen. The bush plum is known as anwekety and only fruits for a few weeks of the year. In the Jukurrpa Dreaming story, the bush plum seeds were blown all over the ancestral lands by the winds, and they bore fruit on Utopia lands. The first anwekety of the Dreaming grew there and became part of the food of the Anmatyerre people. The Dreaming story of the seeds and the ripening of the fruits are all included in the story of Bush Plum.
