Bio
Andrew John Sibley (9 July 1933 – 3 September 2015) was an English-born Australian artist. He is regarded as one of Australia's most important contemporary artists. From his early success in the 1960s Andrew Sibley consistently exhibited throughout Australia and internationally. His work is represented in all major national, state and regional collections in Australia as well as private collections in Australia, Europe, Asia and the United States. Over his 58-year career as an artist, Sibley achieved strong commercial and critical success as well as recognition as a finalist or being awarded numerous major art prizes.
Sibley's career spanned more than six decades, from his native England to the apple orchards of Stanhope in Queensland, to Melbourne's inner-east where in recent years his art had enjoyed a resurgence among collectors. A dedicated figurative painter for most of his life, the popularity of Sibley's work among the country's art establishment fluctuated despite critical acclaim both here and overseas. This was especially true during the 1970s as he eschewed a trend towards a more nationalistic style of expressionism in favour of a European-influenced aesthetic.
Sibley was a recipient of the Transfield Art Prize in 1962, at the time the country's richest art award, and was a two-time finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. He was also a noted teacher at both RMIT and Monash University and since 2012 has seen his work hang on the walls of Kick Gallery, at TarraWarra Museum of Art, as well as at the Melbourne and Singapore art fairs.
